THE HANG — A DEFINING FUNKESTRA ALBUM Some Funkestra records begin with a large cast and a carefully constructed arrangement. The Hang began with six musicians entering Masterlink Studios and discovering, within a few bars, that the band was already there. Dave Limina and Tucker Antell travelled from Boston to join Mike Outram, Mike Sturgis, Karl Vanden Bossche and Stefan Redtenbacher. Dave’s Hammond organ had been part of Stefan’s recorded life since his first Boston album in 1996; more than two decades later, the musical conversation resumed as though somebody had merely paused the tape. LISTEN TO THE HANG The Hang by Funkestra Recorded live over two days, The Hang contains eleven original compositions written across the band. It is small-group Funkestra in its most concentrated form: Hammond organ and Rhodes, tenor saxophone, guitar, bass, drums and percussion, with the arrangements shaped by the players listening and reacting to one another in the room. Alongside Dr Hypenstein and FUNKOPIA, The Hang stands as one of the three cornerstone albums in the Redtenbacher’s Funkestra catalogue. It captures the band’s writing, improvisation and international musical relationships without a large horn section or elaborate studio construction—just six musicians, strong tunes and a considerable amount of creative combustion. PRESS, CHARTS AND EDITORIAL SUPPORT The Hang reached No.1 on the Roots Music Report weekly Top 50 Funk Album Chart and finished at No.17 on its 2021 year-end Funk Album Chart. Broadcaster and music journalist George Graham described the record as “a stellar example” of funk in its classic form, praising its tight playing, varied writing, live character and outstanding soloists.
