How this collaboration started
I first met Jess Hayes when Richard Dunning invited me to judge the 2024 UK Blues Challenge at the Tuesday Night Blues Club (Coulsdon). Fantastic night and line-up—Connolly Hayes were on fire, with Jess sharing lead vocals alongside Frankie Connolly. We spoke about a collab that evening. It took around nine months to get diaries aligned, and I’m super-pleased with the outcome—so much so that I’d like to create more with Jess.
Why this song (and a nod to the greats)
I was delighted Jess chose Chaka Khan’s “Any Old Sunday” from What Cha’ Gonna Do for Me (1981), produced by Arif Mardin—one of my favourite producers. The original Chaka cut features Anthony Jackson on bass—another masterpiece bassline. Point of interest: Chaka’s recording is a cover; the song was originally released by The McCrarys. Our version tips the hat to that lineage while leaning into our live-in-studio soul for lovers aesthetic. A special nod to Ross Stanley, whose arrangement shaped the colour and flow of this session.
