THE BACKSTORY

Austrian keyboarder Markus Marageter, a long-time friend and soul brother invited me to watch him play with the Rosie Brown Band in Brighton featuring Bernd Rest (another Austrian musician) on guitar. As I haven’t seen Rosie and Bernd in a long while it was more than happy to drive down to the Brunswick in Brighton.

I wasn’t aware that they would have a support band made up of young musicians just finishing off school before moving on to University. Whilst I was chatting away to Markus and enjoying their music a beautiful tune arrested us in our tracks. We were immediately smitten by what we heard. Both the song ‘(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano’ written by Sampha (who I admit wasn’t aware of) and the performance and vocal arrangement by Loretta, Grace and Quincy hit our souls.

So much so that straight after their set I approached Loretta (a vocalist and cellist) if she and her friends wanted to come to our studio and film a Masterlink Sessions video with us. Luckily I knew Rosie, Bernd and Markus which surely made it easier to say ‘yes’ for her.

IN LORETTA’S OWN WORDS

“Having been issued an assignment to produce a cover version of a song we all love, we came together and assembled an acoustic, harmony-centred version of Sampha’s ‘No One Knows Me Like The Piano’. We’ve sang and played together in larger band environments before, but to perform this song together as a trio was so special for us. We have performed this song a number of times but to be able to play alongside Stefan’s excellent house band was an especially lovely experience for the three of us.”

SUM UP

I don’t know where they went to school yet I’m certain that their teachers must have been very happy after they heard what they had created for the assigment. The entire Masterlink Sessions team certainly was excited and blown away by their magical performance. No mean feat to step into a recording studio, being filmed and playing with a group of hithero unknown musicians from different age groups. They came through with flying colours!

We are super-happy that we captured this moment – the three of them are moving to different cities persuing their possible future careers. Perhaps this was their swan song, perhaps not. We for one are so pleased that we captured a beautiful moment at an important crossrad in their lives. This is what makes this a special and authentic Masterlink Sessions performance. We hope you’ll love it as much as we do.
