The Tunes
There are well over 200 tunes in the Funkestra ‘tune pool’ – a tough call what to play on this ocassion. Thank you to the fans who have contacted me with suggestions. As it stands – here is the current short-list:
Squid Exit Music (written by Dave Limina) from ‘The Hang’
Wiggles (written by Mike Sturgis) from ‘The Hang’
Funktionality (written by Thomas Feurer and Stefan Redtenbacher) | the ‘de facto’ Funkestra hit with over 2 million streams on Spotify and played by many young bassists around the world | from ‘Dr Hypenstein’
Right On It (written by Thomas Feurer and Stefan Redtenbacher) from ‘Dr Hypenstein’
Boogie On Reggae Woman (Stevie Wonder) | arrangement from one of our first Masterlink Sessions featuring Piers Green
It’s On (George Duke) | arrangement from one of our first Masterlink Sessions featuring Piers Green
The What? Factor (Tony Remy and Stefan Redtenbacher) | from one of our Masterlink Sessions feat. Tony Remy and Nigel Price | from the forthcoming ‘Funkopia’ album
Soul Crusade (written by Stefan Redtenbacher) | a chilled out funky soul ballad from ‘Live Your Best Dream’ – our latest album
Kapow! (written by Stefan Redtenbacher) | brand-new tune – a saxophone and bass duet – never performed before!
Fluffball (written by Stefan Redtenbacher) | from one of our Masterlink Sessions and part of our forthcoming ‘Funkopia’ album.
Funkie Moon (originally performed by drummer Smokey Johnson) | probably the ‘oldest’ tune on this set-list. We used to open our regular 606 club gigs pre-pandemic with this fun arrangement from ‘The Time Thief‘
Monster Funk (written by Tucker Antell and Stefan Redtenbacher) | another Spotify favourite from ‘The Hang’ album.
Let’s see how it will shake out on the night!
Legacy gigs at the Boileroom
Watch this VIDEO from (gulp!) 13 years ago with Mike Sturgis on drums, Simon Allen on saxophone, Rob Taggart on keys, Eran Kendler on guitar (currently on a ‘guitar sabbatical’) and myself on bass:-)
Meeting Rob Blackham
If I’m not mistaken the following pictures are all taken by Rob Blackham. This was our first meeting and the start of a beautiful and creative friendship.
Excitement
I love our work as studio house band for the Masterlink Sessions (it’s been about 5 years now) and it will be also tremendously good fun to go back out in the ‘classic’ Funkestra 5 piece line-up playing orignal music and a few reimagined funky covers.
Thank you Sam Parker and Marianne Windham for the invite to be ‘Brothers In Funk’ next Friday, 15th of November at the Boileroom in Guildford. We are also looking forward to sharing the stage with Bluejay!
